Paradise Palm Beach is a women’s clothing store, gift shop, beachgoers’ essential stock up station, and a member of the Palm Beach Outlet Mall store family all rolled into one. Just as we did for the other retailers, we created a blade sign as well as the lettering for the façade. The latter features bright beach colors that bespeak the products on the inside. They are ideal counterpoints to the light cream color of the wall. The letters also perfectly match the color of the awning. The blade sign is in keeping with the outlet mall’s rules about signage displays. We were able to do so while preserving the branding and marketing messages of the retailer.

A Closer Look at Blade Signs

The blade sign is a remnant of old European marketing techniques. Because streets were narrow and front-facing signage did little good, merchants chose markers that would hang perpendicular to the wall and therefore display to pedestrians up and down the street. Since those early days, this signage solution has, of course, evolved.

Contemporary products are usually no longer made from wood but rather from high-density urethane (HDU), acrylic, or metal. For the purist who likes the idea of a wood shingle hanging outside the storefront, we recommend western red cedar, which is prized for its durability. Connecting the sign to the building is easy to do with a metal arm that we stud-mount to the façade. Some clients like the idea of wrought iron.

Combining Blades with Additional Signage

Take a page from the playbook of Paradise Palm Beach and couple your blade with other markers. Remember that this product only addresses the foot traffic from either direction. Since we do not have the narrow streets that characterized old European inner cities, it pays to think about the consumer across the street. What are your options?

• Window graphics. They address the shopper who is standing right in front of your storefront. This is an excellent opportunity to repeat your company’s name and logo, display special offers, hint at your inventory, or encourage impulse buys. • A-frames and menu boards. When you want to slow down foot traffic in front of your store, place an A-frame with imprinted information in the flow of traffic. Another suitable option is a menu board that highlights your products, specialties, offers, and newly arrived inventory.
